This tutorial will explain how to make lightning by using filters in Photoshop. Open up your document (I am using a 400x400px size). Now go to filter>render>clouds, then go to filter>render>difference clouds Here's what I have now-
Now go to Image>Adjustments>Invert. Now your picture should look something like this-
Now go to Image>Adjustments>Equalize. Now my pic looks like this-
Now press Ctrl+L and move the sliders to the right side until the lightning bolts stand out more.... My picture looks like this now-
Now ... we could leave it as it is... but someone asked for more uses for the layer mask. Now is your chance to use one. We can easily insert these lightning bolts into pictures. Most people would use the eraser and pic out each bolt, but in the long run they may need to go back and alter the bolts but can not. So you can easily use the layer mask feature for adding the bolts. You can find the layer mask tutorial here. I made this picture using layer masks and the lightning tut.
(it was rushed ok!!!)
Now have a look at my layer arrangements-
The first thing I did was duplicate my background layer (ctrl+J while selecting that layer) and apply a motion blur to it. This kind of gives the effect of rain/wind. Then I got the lightning result from my tutorial result and added color and added a layer mask to it (you can add color by using ctrl+B or ctrl+U. Using the layer mask, I picked out different lightning bolts. I duplicated the lightning bolt layers to get different bolts.
I also duplicated the background layer and placed it on top of all the other layers. I applied a layer mask to it and then I brushed the parts of the guy/monster/spawn I wanted to show up on TOP of the lightning bolts. This saves you the trouble of having to cut around the guy/monster/spawn and lets you easily/quickly make the guy/monster/spawn stand out on top of the lightning bolts. This is a good example of layer management. I hope you learnt something from this tutorial.
